Why are Rock T shirts almost always made out of black cloth? According to the psychology of colors, black means authority and power. And these are what rock music is all about.
Black also evokes strong and overwhelming emotions such anger, rage, and sadness. It is a dramatic representation of what brews within one’s soul. Again, this is what Rock n’ Roll is all about.
But aside from the attempt to be in tune with the extreme themes of rock music, rock T shirts are mostly black simply because everybody looks good in black. Fashion-wise, a black shirt makes the wearer appear thinner and more sophisticated. Fashion magazines say men are drawn to wearing black shirts because black shirts keep them looking casual and rugged.
Now, what other possible colors fit rock-inspired shirts? Let’s try red. Although red is all about aggression, passion and rage, which perfectly characterize a banging rock concert, it also represents love, roses and hearts, which not many rock stars are fond of.
Fashion-wise, a red shirt is hard to pull off. Wearing red exudes a feeling of sophistication and femininity as it is closely associated with pink and purple. Red shirts and clothing are almost always associated with women with red lips and red roses.
How about blue, green or orange? As blue is the overwhelmingly favorite fashion color of almost everyone, it talks about the constants in our lives such as the sky and ocean, which are themes that are too tame for a smashing, guitar-playing rock star or as a rock band merchandise. Blue is the least gender-specific color, which makes it good for business, but it may be too calm and sedate for rock-inspired T shirts.
Green, on the other hand, may be perfect as a fashion backdrop since it represents our natural backdrop in the world, but this does not mean it has good rock-sense. Studies in the effects of color say that anything green relaxes people mentally and physically, helps soothe depression and anxiety, and creates a feeling of self-control, harmony and renewal. Rock music is not about being relaxed but all about losing control, and the color of your Rock T shirt should say that.
Meanwhile, orange stimulates activity, appetite and socialization. These things could do well to a rocking T shirt, but the color orange is closely related to yellow, pink and red. That’s not good at all if you want to sell your garments to a rock-culture-obsessed market.
Black shirts, black leather pants, dark eyeliners, black nail polish, leather boots and tattered jeans complete the typical Rock n’ Roll look, but any true-blue rocker will be quick to tell you that it is not what you wear but how you live. More than fad or fashion, it is a way of life – one that is carefree, easy-going and being true to oneself. Rock outfits and everything that goes with them are just the outward manifestations of the true rocker within. It is not even the songs or the music.
These days, the most popular Rock T shirts are UFC’s Affliction, Gothic and skull abstractions, movie-themes, metal and concert T-shirts in a variety of shirt styles such as cotton stretch/fishnet shirts, see-through clothes, skirts and dresses, bondage skirts, and leather, with metal, leather and assorted accessories. Punk clothing, punk rock memorabilia and vintage rock are also very popular. Whichever of these you yourself might prefer, just remember that you are being part of a whole culture that has endured for decades: rock lives on.
